Intercultural Hospice Service Dong Ban Ja

Volunteers from many different countries provide support at Dong Ban Ja to seriously ill and dying people from all cultural backgrounds.

The intercultural hospice service Dong Ban Ja supports and advises terminally ill individuals from different cultural backgrounds and their relatives at the end of life and during the grieving process. The team works in a culturally sensitive manner and is always guided by a humanistic view of humanity.

Services

Terminally ill and dying people, as well as their relatives and loved ones, require special attention. With our intercultural outpatient hospice service Dong Ban Ja, we enable them to live with dignity and self-determination until the very end – taking into account their cultural and migration-related physical, psychological, social, religious, and belief-related needs.

What we offer in detail:

  • Support for terminally ill and dying people and their relatives in the final stages of life, regardless of religion, nationality, sexual orientation or worldview
  • Advice to relieve the burden on all those involved by providing information about palliative care, advance directives and further assistance, for example with organising care
  • Support and relief for relatives through our visits at home, in hospitals or in care facilities: we talk to people, simply listen or provide support with language-related communication problems
  • Support during the grieving process

Our services are free of charge for the people we support.

The services comply with the requirements of Section 39a SGB 5, i.e. Section 39a of the Fifth Book of the Social Code, for outpatient hospice and palliative care and counselling. All employees are discreet and subject to confidentiality.

Get involved

What we need is your support! Here's how you can help:

  • Tell your family, friends and acquaintances about our hospice service and our work.
  • Volunteer with us.
  • Help us to continue offering our services and supporting people by making a one-off or regular donation.

Intercultural volunteering: becoming a hospice volunteer

The way pain and illness are dealt with varies greatly from culture to culture. In addition to the native language, other cultural and spiritual characteristics often regain importance at the end of life.

We train volunteer end-of-life companions in a preparatory course to advise, accompany and support people at the end of life and those close to them in a culturally sensitive manner. This often changes the volunteers’ perspective on life and death: many course participants describe engaging with issues of dying, illness and grief as deeply enriching on a personal level. Through their commitment to those affected, our volunteers experience a great deal of gratitude and warmth.

The six-month preparatory course, taught by qualified instructors and comprising 130 hours, provides participants with, among others, the following qualifications:

  • They accompany seriously ill or dying people and their relatives, regardless of faith or origin.
  • They offer spiritual support, help organise care and advise on the selection of care products.
  • They support and relieve relatives and caregivers at home, in hospitals or in care facilities.
  • They also help those affected during the grieving process.

The course modules are conducted in German. A good command of German is therefore required.

It takes place every Tuesday from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Haus des Humanismus (Potsdamer Str. 157, 10783 Berlin).

Donate to Dong Ban Ja

Grief is individual, because everyone grieves differently, especially when it comes to intercultural experiences. A memory of faraway places, the sound of a familiar intonation that has not been heard for a long time – so many things can gain meaning at the end of life. Thanks to generous donations, full-time and volunteer staff at our intercultural hospice service are able to care for and accompany people.

We need donations, because our services for the bereaved, whether as individual support or in conjunction with the family, are also financed by donations and are only possible because of them.

Perhaps there will soon be a special occasion in your family and you would like to collect donations for our hospice service Dong Ban Ja. Or you may wish to raise awareness within your company about Dong Ban Ja and the need for donations. Please feel free to contact us so that we can discuss your ideas together. We look forward to getting to know you.

Many of us think about what will remain of our lives. Here you will find initial information about bequests in favour of our intercultural hospice service Dong Ban Ja.

About Dong Ban Ja

Dong Ban Ja is Korean and means ‘accompanying people’. That is precisely our mission: we are there for seriously ill and dying people from all cultural backgrounds.

Our approximately 150 volunteers from more than 50 different countries accompany sick and dying people as well as their relatives in a culturally sensitive manner – at home, in hospitals, in nursing homes or in facilities for the disabled. Regardless of faith or origin, we provide support and relief, including support for relatives during the period of mourning after death.

One's own cultural and religious background often becomes more important again at the end of life. Paying attention to this and appreciating it can give people a sense of home in the last phase of their lives. We see this as our very special and unique task.

Please feel free to contact us. Our services are free of charge and comply with the nationwide legal requirements for outpatient hospice services.
